FAQ: Filming in Slovakia

What is the maximum cash rebate I can receive in Slovakia?

In Slovakia, you can receive a 33% cash rebate on eligible local production expenses. Additionally, there is a 14% rebate available for fees paid to foreign cast and crew working in the country. If your production takes place in the Košice region, you can also qualify for the "Košice Boost," which provides an extra 5-10% regional cashback, bringing your combined maximum return up to 43%.

What are the minimum local spend requirements to qualify for the Slovak cash rebate?

The minimum required spend depends on your project's format: €100,000 for individual feature films, €50,000 for documentaries or animated films, and €300,000 for television series of up to 26 episodes. These minimums must be spent in the Slovak Republic over a period of 3 years following the registration of your project.

Are the fees of my foreign cast and crew eligible for the rebate?

Yes. Slovakia offers a specialized 14% cash rebate on income earned by foreign professionals (cast and crew) working on Slovak territory who remain tax residents in their home countries. There is no requirement to pay withholding tax in Slovakia on these fees. This 14% rebate is limited to a maximum of 10% of the project's overall approved eligible costs.

What formats of audiovisual works are eligible for the Slovak rebate?

The cash rebate supports narrative feature films with a running time of at least 70 minutes, TV miniseries or series with a maximum of 26 parts (at least 40 minutes per part), standalone documentaries of at least 50 minutes, and animated works with a total running time of at least 26 minutes.

Do I need to establish a local company in Slovakia to claim the rebate?

No, you do not need to establish your own local company. We serve directly as your local service producer through our Bratislava-based company, EuroFilm s.r.o.. We act as your partner to seamlessly handle all local compliance, crew, locations, and budgeting, allowing us to secure and process the cash rebate on your behalf.

Is there a cultural test, and how does it apply to international co-productions?

Yes, projects must pass a cultural test by scoring a minimum of 24 points out of a maximum 48. However, if your project is an official co-production certified under the Council of Europe Convention on Cinematographic Co-production, it is automatically considered to have satisfied the cultural test criteria and is exempt from taking it.

Is there a cap on the eligible budget or maximum rebate payout?

There is no budget limit on eligible costs in Slovakia. However, the invoiced amount of eligible expenditures may not exceed 80% of the total film project production budget, and the maximum total public funding is capped at 50%.

What exact costs qualify for the standard 33% cash rebate?

Eligible expenses for the 33% tier include actual incurred and paid costs directly related to the production, fees paid to local cast and crew, and costs paid to entities that have a tax domicile in Slovakia.

When and how should we register our project to secure funding?

Your project must be registered with the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, which includes a €1,000 registration fee and is valid for 3 years. To ensure your expected rebate is included in the state budget for the following year, the project must be registered before August 1st or August 31st of the current year.

When is the cash rebate actually paid out to our production?

The cash rebate is payable after you have completed the production, paid all eligible costs, and delivered the final balance sheet alongside an independent auditor's report.

How does the local currency affect our budget in Slovakia?

Slovakia uses the EURO as its local currency. This allows you to avoid the currency conversion costs and risks that are typical when filming in neighboring countries.

How do you ensure our spending complies with the rebate audit requirements?

We pre-structure your entire budget from day one to guarantee audit success. We coordinate the audits directly so your team spends less time dealing with compliance forms and more time focusing on the creative process.

FAQ: Filming in Poland

What is the cash rebate rate I can receive in Poland?

In Poland, you can secure a 30% cash rebate on eligible Polish spending for your production.

What formats of audiovisual works are eligible for the Polish cash rebate?

The 30% Polish cash rebate currently supports a variety of formats, specifically feature films, television series, and documentaries.

Do I need to establish a local company in Poland to access the rebate?

No, establishing your own local entity is not necessary. We serve directly as your local service producer through our Polish entity, Euro Film Service sp. z o.o.. We act as your single accountable partner to handle all local production services and compliance to ensure your rebate is secured.

Can we split our production between Poland and Slovakia to maximize our budget?

Yes. Because Poland and Slovakia are neighboring countries, we specialize in close cross-border collaboration. We design a strategic spending plan to combine the strengths of both industries, prioritizing rebate maximization to reduce your net production costs across both territories.

How do you manage the cash rebate audit process in Poland?

We pre-structure your spending plan for audit success to ensure on-time payouts. Just as we do in Slovakia, we coordinate the compliance steps to protect your bottom line with complete transparency.

Will we encounter any hidden fees or "local extras" during our Polish shoot?

No. We pride ourselves on offering a full production service where we serve as your one accountable partner from the first estimate to the final wrap. We provide clear contingencies and guarantee no hidden "local extras".

How does the Polish rebate compare to the maximum possible return in Slovakia?

Poland offers a highly competitive flat 30% rebate on eligible spending. By comparison, Slovakia offers a 33% base rebate, a 14% foreign crew rebate, and a potential 5-10% regional top-up (amounting to up to 43% combined return). We can help you calculate which territory offers the best net savings for your specific script.

Do you provide a customized strategy for our Polish spending?

Yes. Every decision we make prioritizes your rebate maximization. We design an incentive strategy to maximize your cashback and significantly reduce your net costs.
